for the button making process we always choose the dried hard shell or hard green coconut shell which is light in color than the dried shell. baby coconuts are not suitable for this because they are not hard enough for the process although they have a beautiful light yellowish white color.

mostly the cross section of a dried coconut is black or dark brown in color. coconut is a ball shaped nut. after seperated in to two halves we can remove the flesh. after removing flesh we get a woody like bowl or a cup. the composition of the coconut shell is similar to wood and it contains cellulose, lignin and ash basically at different level of percentages.

you can easily and quickly dry these shells from sunlight. only thing you have to make sure is the shell does not contain any moisture in it. perfectly dried shells make the process much better and easier.

not every shell has the same color. the color is varied even from a slight difference.

the coconut shell buttons can be both hand made or machine made. if you need few buttons for yourself just to sew in to your shirt, frock or to any fabric or else to decorate your bag or shoes, you can make it to yourself by just using a grinder to hole it.

first choose a shell of your preferrence color and then brake it to get small pieces. make sure you brake it to get enough sized pieces. then using a small saw blade or anything cut the shell piece to get a regular shape. if you are afraid of using sharp things you can ask somebody else to do it for you or you can just polish the piece from a hard sand paper until you get the right shape you need. you don't need to cut the right shape always. so don't worry about it. no matter how irregular your shape is, you can make it perfect by polishing from a sand paper.

after you get the edges smooth now you can smoothen the surfaces. here also by using the sand papers you can change the shape of the surface. it will depend on your creativity. after smoothen the button you can hole it by using a drill pin. make sure your drill pin is the smallest one because we only need a hole to run a thread trough. number of holes too can be made on your prferrence. it can be two holed button or four holed button, it depends on you.

after holed the button you are done with the process. now you can sew it to your favourite shirt or match it with you hand bag to add a trendy different.
